Digital Eye Strain And Dry Eyes

Digital Eye Strain and Dry Eyes seem to be more prevalent today than it was just a decade ago. The causes of digital eye fatigue is due to behavior, whereas dry eyes can be a physical abnormality.

Digital Eye Strain

Most of the time eye fatigue is because of the amount of time we are on cellphones, tablets and or computer screens. When we are on these devices we have a tendency to blink less which helps lubricate the eyes. If you have sore eyes at the end of the day there is a good chance that it is happening to you.

On the average we blink 20 times per minute unconsciously. When we are engaged in a video game, reading text messages and various other things requiring concentration we tend to blink much less. The result is dry eyes which can cause symptoms. Headaches and or blurred vision can be the result of digital strain.

Solutions For Problems Due To Overuse

Is the solution to throw away your devices and stop watching TV all together? This will work but none of us are going to do this! In this day and age we rely on digital devices for nearly everything.

Taking regular breaks from devices will help! When you are using your device try to be mindful to blink more often. Even closing your eyes for 20 seconds can help.

Staying hydrated is a great idea and water is the best to help. Also drinking the proper amount will having you take breaks from your device!

Do you live in a climate that is dry or cold? Dry climates and running heaters can bring down the humidity of your workspace. In room humidifiers can help this, and bringing the room to at least 40% humidity is good.

Reducing the blue light exposure has shown to help some people who get eye strain. This can be alleviated by wearing glasses that block blue light. If migraines are a problem when using digital devices then we recommend trying lenses with an FL-41 tint.

Dry Eye Disease

Dry eyes can be a problem and is due to a physiological issues. These can be as simple as dry eyes due to aging, medications and hormonal changes. More serious can be due to a number of diseases including but not limited to: Sjögren’s syndrome, allergic eye disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, sarcoidosis, vitamin A deficiency and thyroid disorders.

The best course of action is to visit your eye care professional for an examination to find out why you are having problems.
